  3. Storage requirements. Some strains need refrigeration to stay viable; a shelf-stable capsule uses different (also legitimate) strains — check the label matches how you'll actually store it.
  4. Realistic expectations. A probiotic is a small, supportive input alongside fibre variety, not a substitute for a varied diet — which remains the single best-evidenced lever for gut microbiome diversity at any age.

The most consistently supported way to support gut bacterial diversity after 50 is dietary variety — specifically a wide range of plant fibres (the "30 plants a week" heuristic used in several microbiome studies), not any single superfood. Fermented foods (yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi) contribute live cultures too, and for many people are a more cost-effective first step than a capsule.
