About Lifeguard Health

About us

We tell you exactly what's in it, and how much.

Lifeguard Health has been formulating supplements for New Zealand adults over 45 since 2014. Three products, every active printed on the label with its form and its amount, and a published standard for how they are put together.

What most labels don't tell you

Pick up almost any supplement in New Zealand and try to work out how much of the active ingredient you are actually getting. It is harder than it should be, and usually for one of two reasons.

  • A proprietary blend. “Joint Complex 1,200mg” with no breakdown. The total is printed; the split is not. You cannot tell whether it is 1,100mg of the cheapest ingredient and a pinch of everything else.
  • A dry-herb equivalent quoted on its own. “Equivalent to 9,000mg of grape seed” sounds substantial. By itself it tells you nothing, because it describes the plant material the extract was made from — not what is in the capsule.

Neither is against the rules. Both make comparison almost impossible, which is usually the point.

What our labels look like

This is the full actives panel for Lifeguard Essentials, exactly as it appears on the bottle.

Lifeguard Essentials — each capsule contains

  • Turmeric (Meriva® Curcumin Phospholipid Complex) 250mg, equivalent to 50mg curcuminoids
  • Black pepper extract 5mg, equivalent to 250mg dry Piper nigrum
  • Olive leaf extract 200mg, equivalent to 2,000mg dry, with 20% oleuropein
  • Red grape seed extract 75mg, equivalent to 9,000mg dry Vitis vinifera
  • Red grape skin extract 75mg, equivalent to 1,500mg dry Vitis vinifera
  • Boswellia extract 62mg, 30% boswellic acid from Boswellia serrata
  • Baical skullcap extract 30mg, equivalent to 1,500mg dry Scutellaria baicalensis

Recommended adult dose: two capsules a day.

Three things in there are worth pointing at, because they are the difference between a label you can check and one you cannot.

  • Both numbers, every time. Where there is a dry-herb equivalent, the extract weight sits beside it. Grape seed extract 75mg, equivalent to 9,000mg dry. You get the impressive figure and the real one, and you can tell them apart.
  • The standardisation is stated. Olive leaf at 20% oleuropein. Boswellia at 30% boswellic acid. Saffron in Lifeguard Sleep at 0.3% safranal. Two extracts of the same herb can differ several-fold, and this is the number that tells you which one you are holding.
  • The form is named. In Lifeguard Immune: zinc as citrate, selenium as selenomethionine, copper as gluconate. Most labels stop at the mineral and leave the form to your imagination.

How to check any label — including ours

Five questions. They work on our bottles and on everybody else's.

  1. Is there an amount beside every active ingredient, or only a blend total?
  2. If there is a large “equivalent to” number, is the actual extract weight printed next to it?
  3. For a herbal extract, is the standardisation given — a percentage of the active compound?
  4. For a mineral, is the form named?
  5. Is the daily dose stated plainly, and does the amount per dose match what the research actually used?

If a label cannot answer those five, you are being asked to take it on trust. That is a reasonable thing to decline.

Every ingredient, explained

Who we make it for

Nutritional needs shift with age. Vitamin B12 absorption tends to decline. Vitamin D intake runs lower through a New Zealand winter, because of how low the sun sits at our latitude. New Zealand soils are selenium-poor, which makes dietary intake here less reliable than it is elsewhere. And diets that were varied enough at thirty are often narrower at sixty.

None of that is dramatic, and none of it is a disease. It is the ordinary background against which we formulate: a small range of everyday supplements for adults 45 and over, designed to be taken consistently rather than reached for once something has already gone wrong.

How we formulate

Most supplement brands ask you to trust them. We would rather you checked — so we publish the standard rather than describing it.

  • An ingredient earns its place or it is not in the bottle. Published research in adults broadly like our customers, not whatever is trending.
  • The dose is the one that was studied. Within established safe intake levels, standardised extracts where they exist, no mega-doses.
  • Everything is on the label. No proprietary blends. Every active with its quantity, its form and its dry-herb equivalent.
  • The range stays small. Three products, made properly, rather than fifteen made adequately.

Who formulates them

Every Lifeguard Health formula is designed by a registered New Zealand doctor, and has been since 2014.

That tells you who makes the decisions. It does not tell you a product will do anything for you, and it is not a medical recommendation. It is a statement about how the formulas are put together — which is why we publish the amounts and let you judge them.

What we will not claim

Worth saying plainly, because most brands leave it out.

  • Our products are dietary supplements. They are not medicines, and not a treatment for any condition.
  • We do not claim they prevent illness, relieve symptoms, or change anything you have been diagnosed with.
  • We do not use customer reviews to say things we could not say ourselves.
  • Supplements sit alongside sleep, food, movement and proper medical care — not in place of them.

If something is wrong, see your doctor. Persistent fatigue, poor sleep, joint pain or repeated infections are worth investigating properly. If you take prescription medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are managing a health condition, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting any supplement.
