Science of turmeric

Turmeric root used for the Meriva curcumin in Lifeguard Essentials, NZ

Turmeric is one of the most widely studied plants in nutrition science, with thousands of published papers exploring its constituents.

Its best-known components are curcumin and two related compounds, together known as the curcuminoids — plant phytochemicals (see Why Nutraceuticals Matter).

Turmeric has a long history of culinary and traditional use across Asia, where it is a staple of everyday cooking.

Curcumin dissolves poorly and is not readily absorbed on its own, so it is usually taken with something that helps it through the body's barriers.

Lifeguard Essentials uses Meriva branded curcumin, which combines curcumin with lecithin to improve solubility, together with black pepper extract. Each capsule contains 250 milligrams of Meriva Curcumin Phospholipid Complex (equivalent to 50 milligrams of curcuminoids) and 5 milligrams of black pepper extract (equivalent to 250 milligrams of Piper nigrum).
